How to Choose the Right Color Combinations for a Perfect Logo Design?

Choosing the right color combination is perhaps the most important step when making a custom logo for a company. A logo is meant to build the brand recognition and corporate identity of a company. The important question here is how to pick the right color scheme and make a perfect combination to make a perfect logo design, one that successfully attracts the targeted customers. Great graphic designers know the value of simplicity in designs, that’s why they choose white background most of the times. The main reason for choosing white color as a background is that it enhances the design with a relaxed background that is easy on the eyes.

The next important thing is font color. The tagline or any written message in the logo is the defining text that delivers the brands message to the targeted audience. The most important point here is that the font color should be readable. No harsh color should be used that might irritate the eyes. Keeping it readable and aligned with the rest of the logo is a simple yet crucial job.

The color scheme of the actual logo design is the main part. It should complement overall colors used in the branding of that company.  And, the overall color scheme should be decided according to the demographics of the target market. For a brand representing corporate identity, serious colors like black, gray, blue and the likes are suitable. For consumable products or services brand to attract the masses, use of red color is a must in the logo. Similarly use vibrant and bright colors for a brand for kids. But take great care while using bright colors; you don’t want to scare away the people who see the logo.

Generally speaking, bold and bright colors are used to grab attention. Soft colors deliver a sophisticated brand identity, but there is a risk they might be overlooked. Different colors give away a certain underlying message, choose the colors according to the message that the brand intends to deliver through the logo.

·       Red color denotes passion & energy, aggression or danger, as well as heat or warmth. Looking at red color stimulates appetite, that’s why the logo of so many food products and restaurants has red color.
·       Orange color represents modern thinking and innovation. In a logo orange can convey fun & youth, as well as affordability & approachability.

·       Yellow is a color that needs the designers to be very cautious when using it. Yellow color gives away negative vibes and it represents cowardice. Mostly it is used in warning signs. But, if used in a right manner, yellow can be friendly, sunny and warm; it also can evoke appetite.
·       Green represents nature. Use green when a brand wants to demonstrate its ethical and natural credentials, for example in organic food brand. Green also embodies freshness and growth, and that’s why it is used in financial products too.

·       Blue is mostly used in corporate logos. Blues denotes seriousness, professionalism, integrity and calm. Plus blue also implies success and authority, which is why the logo of government and financial bodies has blue color in it.

·       Purple implies luxury and royalty.  Purple has represented the church for a long while, denoting dignity and wisdom. Purple is a sign of riches and wealth.
·       Black color has dual meaning. It can embody power and sophistication. Or, it can represent death and villainy.  Generally, most of the logos have a black and white version of them. Monochrome logos are currently in trend too.

·       White color represents innocence, cleanliness and simplicity.  In design terms, a white logo will always require a colored field to stand out. Most companies like to have a color as well as a white version of their logo. For instance the word-mark logo Coca-Cola is white on its brown bottles and red tins, but red when used on white background.

·       Brown gives away masculine vibes and products related to outdoors and rural life have brown logos.
·       Pink represents fun and flirty and femininity. Avoid pink in products that are not meant for women specifically.




Remember, these rules are just a guideline and are not rigid of course. You can bend the rules or even break the rules as long as you are sure what you are doing. The perfect logo is simple yet memorable and timeless in itself. Be sure that your logo design accomplishes that goal.
